The Veloway — Austin Bike Trail

Cyclists looking for an escape from motorized traffic can head to Slaughter Creek Metropolitan Park in southwest Austin, Texas.

Tucked between 100 acres of parkland, the Austin Veloway bike trail allows cyclists to ride comfortably minus the street noise and traffic. But most importantly, cyclists enjoy the scenic landscape filled with beautiful wildflowers and perhaps a squirrel or two.

This unique trail, which is about 3.1 miles long and 23 feet wide, is perfect bikers of all experience levels from novice to expert. Beginners can feel at ease with the Veloway’s two wide lanes, where slower traffic stays on the right and faster cyclists can easily pass on the left lane. A steep hill and winding paths will keep more experienced cyclists challenged.

Austin prides itself on its beloved hike and bike trails around the Texas capital city, but the Austin Veloway’s exclusivity to cyclists and roller bladders, make it extra special. That means there are no joggers, walkers, pets, or baby strollers on this trail.

The Austin Veloway’s mix of gentle hills and curves make for a great workout despite the short ride. This Austin bike trail is right across the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, so don’t be surprised to see some of nature’s work out there. A snake crossing sign at the beginning of the trail simply means keep riding if something slithers by.

Veloway Bike Trail Tips

Remember the Texas heat can be brutal. And though there’s plenty of shade at the Veloway Bike Trail, riders should take water bottles to stay hydrated. A water fountain is located at the trail’s entrance, but can get warm. Get there early, and avoid the bike trail during sun’s peak hours. Don’t forget the sunblock.

Though the Veloway Bike Trail does not feel crowded even when there are several riders, hitting the trail during a weekday morning can be quite a pleasant experience.
